AHD Plant Ltd supply both quarried and recycled aggregates to building contractors, landscapers and the domestic market. We have an experienced and reliable team delivering aggregates in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

So what are the different types of aggregate and what are they used for?

To give you an idea here’s a quick rundown of some of the types and their typical uses:

Screened Hardcore:
Screened hardcore consists of sizeable pieces of broken up brick and concrete. This type of aggregate is passed over a screen to remove any unwanted debris such as plastic or fine soil. It’s used as a base for construction or a capping layer in access roads.

Crushed Hardcore:
This is produced by crushing the screened hardcore material. It is a finer material and is used for capping off larger screened hardcore. It can also be used for hardstanding areas. With a low void content it’s easy to work with and can be levelled out and compacted to provide a smooth surface.

Road Planings:
Road planings are made from milled road surface tarmac. It’s very versatile and hard-wearing, easily compacted and typically used in access track road surfacing. Can also be used for capping off and smoothing over screened hardcore.

Screened Topsoil:
Our topsoil is screened to remove any large stones, vegetation and debris. It’s ideal for turfing over and is easily raked and levelled out. We store our topsoils undercover to keep them well hydrated and easy to handle.

Dug Topsoil:
This isn’t as refined as our screened topsoil as it’s unprocessed and comes as is straight from the area of excavation. It’s useful for larger areas that require a lot of topsoil. We wouldn’t recommend you use it for turfing unless you plan to harrow and till it before proceeding.

MOT Type 1:
This is a crushed aggregate with stone sizes from 40mm to dust. Ideal as a sub-base for driveways and paths when compacted, it has excellent load bearing properties.

MOT Type 3:
Type 3 is a granular sub base material, used for sub bases that require reduced fine material. It is free draining and used for projects such as gravel paving, grass paving or resin bound paving.

6F2:
Also known as 3″ Down Crusher Run or 3″ Crush. It consists of crushed concrete, brick and mortar produced as a by-product of demolition projects. Sizes range from 75mm down to dust. It is a hard wearing aggregate for haul roads, for capping unmade ground and as a general bulk fill product.
